Gallery:  RTS Web Site

Client: River Touring Section (RTS) of the Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club

Requirement: The RTS management committee wanted to have its own web site and to have direct control over the entry of club outings so that current trip information would always be available on the site. Data entry needed to be simple and secure. Outings Chair or designated alternate must have exclusive control over trip approval and publication yet not be burdened with sole responsibility for trip entry.

Solution: The Angeles Chapter provided free space on a Windows server with Active Server Pages and Access database support. Cyberglitz designed and built the public site and administrative tools. The public RTS site (http://angeles.sierraclub.org/rts) displays club information and has two data-driven pages: Outings and Management Committee. The admin tools for maintaining the RTS database enable all leaders to enter their own proposed trips. The Outings Chair reviews proposed trips and clicks an "Approve" button to make them appear on the public RTS site.

Admin Features:

  • "Template" records: Purple color designates "Template" trip records used for frequently run trips. "Copy" button creates a new "Trip" record with basic information filled in.

  • Proposed and Approved trips: Every person in the Leaders table has access to the green Proposed Trips admin pages, but only people with "Approve" privileges have the "Approve" button which moves the selected Proposed trip to the Approved Trips page. Only people with "Approve" privileges have access to the blue Approved Trips admin pages. Approved trips appear on the Outings page on the public site (http://angeles.sierraclub.org/rts/outings.asp).

  • Pre-Qualified Leader Lists: The trip rating is selected from a dropdown. A Javascript routine instantly reloads the Leader dropdowns for Leader, Assistant 1 and Assistant 2 with only those leaders qualified to lead the trip.
  • Leaders with "Approve" privileges can edit the Leader records of everyone in the Leaders table. Leaders with "Propose" privileges can only edit their own record.

  • Leaders with "Approve" privileges can award or revoke "Approve" privileges to any other Leader

  • All leader names in trip displays are mailto: links
